Hi, I'm Harrison Serna-Zahn, owner and artist at Technica Gold Arts. Based in Oklahoma City, I've been an artist essentially my whole life with years of experience doing portraits with imitation gold leaf. After coming across glass gilding on some old blogs, I picked up an old guidebook and learned from trial and error, the ins and outs of gilding with real gold leaf.
I've always appreciated art that is simple yet eye-catching and understated yet complex and glass gilding perfectly epitomizes these contrasts. I now create gilded work on site for commercial projects as well as commission and smaller art pieces out of my home studio. When working alongside clients my aim is to honor their existing branding or idea and use glass gilding to maximize the visual appeal and reach of their business.

What is reverse glass gilding?
Reverse glass gilding is a specialized form of sign painting dating back hundreds of years. It is most recognizable for its use of real gold and precious materials in various finishes, along with paint, to create eye-catching designs. All the materials are meticulously applied by hand to the back side of glass so that it can be properly viewed from the front. It has infinite applications such as store fronts for business names and logos, residential and commercial transoms or doors for address numbers, and custom designs for family name-plates, sports related memorabilia, Christmas ornaments and more.
What different looks, colors etc. can a glass gild have?
The most common materials used are gold and paint. The gold used can be 12ct white for a silver look, 18ct yellow for a lemon color, or 23-24ct for a true gold tone. Additionally, the gold can be applied in a burnished (mirror) finish or matte (satin) finish for different effects and visual texture.
Paint in nearly any color can be used to add shadows, lines and lettering to further flesh out a design. Beyond that, mother of pearl and variegated leaf can add other interesting colors and effects when more variety is desired.
Why request a glass gilded window for your business?

How long will a glass gild last?
There are multiple factors that could determine the lifespan of a glass gild but with proper care a piece can last a lifetime. Since the piece is applied on the inside of a window it wont be directly exposed to weather or other external factors. Additionally, avoiding the use of chemical cleaners directly on the gild, will go a long way in preserving.. Alternative window treatments, such as vinyl decals which are often applied to the exterior, are likely to only last 3-10 years and can potentially fray, peel or fade. But, with some basic care taken, a glass gild can last decades.
